The EHS Jazz Program allows students to explore a new genre of musical expertise and study a broad array of music styles and history. All students are introduced to a new form of musical talent known as improvisation!

 

JAZZ 1- VARSITY ENSEMBLE

The Varsity Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Flood, performs the most rigorous pieces, featuring music from Count Basie, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, etc. Students learn how to implement characteristics of music theory into solos/improv, study a broad array of unique chord studies, jazz styles, and jazz patterns that have influenced the past century of jazz music.

 

JAZZ 2- NON-VARSITY ENSEMBLE

The Non-Varsity Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Tullius, offers a musical experience to new jazz musicians and provides opportunities for developing musicians to enhance their playing capabilities and knowledge of jazz. Students learn how to play jazz both rhythmically and stylistically. Learning the importance of mixed rhythms, articulations, dynamics, and ensemble balance.

 

JAZZ 3- SUB-NON-VARSITY ENSEMBLE

The Sub-Non-Varsity Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Perez, is the foundation of the jazz program at Eastlake HS. Students are granted the perfect opportunity to play and experiment with secondary instruments associated with jazz and learn the prerequisites to jazz style and music. Students begin their jazz education through ensemble and section performance, learning how to play amongst a new arrangement of an ensemble and becoming familiar with the jazz setting.
